One Small Step That Changed Stevany's Life
Amidst the bustle of a junior high school in Tokyo, Japan, there was a student named Stevany. A ninth-grader, she was known for being quiet and shy, rarely engaging in conversation with her peers.
While other students spent their time joking, chatting, or gathering in the schoolyard, Stevany usually chose to sit alone. It wasn't that she disliked friendship, deep down, she actually longed for close friends and the ability to speak freely. However, her desire was constantly held back by fear.
Whenever she thought about greeting someone, her mind would fill with worries. She feared saying the wrong thing, being perceived as boring, or receiving an unpleasant response. Consequently, Stevany often chose silence, even though she wanted to be involved.
This habit of solitude extended to her life at home. As an only child, Stevany was accustomed to spending a lot of time by herself. Her parents worked hard and had busy schedules of their own, while they loved her dearly, time for long conversations or shared activities was limited.
Stevany’s days followed a predictable routine: she would go to school in the morning, attend classes, complete her assignments, and return home. Little changed in her daily life.
Then, one day, an announcement from her teacher caused her anxiety to spike. All ninth-grade students were going to have a Physics exam. For some students, the test might have been just an ordinary challenge. For Stevany, however, Physics was one of the most difficult subjects to grasp. The formulas, numbers, and interconnected concepts often left her feeling bewildered.
She had actually tried studying on her own, reading the textbook, noting down formulas, and working through practice problems. Unfortunately, the longer she studied, the more confused she became. She began to feel frustrated.
"How am I ever going to understand all this?" she wondered. Amidst this confusion, Stevany thought of Selena, a classmate known for her academic prowess, especially in Physics.
Selena wasn't just smart, she was also known for being friendly and always willing to help classmates who were struggling. Many students often sought her out with questions, and she would patiently explain the material.
Stevany wanted to ask for Selena’s help. She imagined how great it would be to study with someone who truly understood the subject. However, that desire was held back by fear.
Whenever she saw Selena chatting with friends, Stevany would simply watch from afar, often rehearsing the words in her mind:
“Selena, could I study with you?”
Yet, the words never actually made it out. Stevany was afraid of being a nuisance, worried Selena might be busy, and concerned that her request would be seen as a hassle. In reality, however, those worries might not have been true at all.
One afternoon, as the lunch break began, Stevany sat in her usual spot. She opened her packed lunch while occasionally glancing at the other students chatting nearby. A part of her wanted to join in, but she didn't know how to start.
From a distance, Selena spotted Stevany. Selena had noticed that Stevany was often alone. She had also observed that the girl sometimes seemed to want to approach the others but would always hesitate and hold back. Finally, Selena decided to walk over.
“Hi, Stevany. Having lunch?” she asked with a warm smile.
Stevany was startled, she hadn't expected Selena to greet her first.
“Oh, yes. I’m eating,” Stevany replied softly.
Selena then sat down nearby. She didn't jump straight into anything serious, instead, they began their conversation with simple topics, like the food, the class that had just ended, and plans for after school.
At first, Stevany gave only brief answers. She still felt awkward and unsure of what to say. However, Selena didn't pressure her to be talkative. She let the conversation flow naturally. Gradually, Stevany began to feel at ease.
She realized that talking to others wasn't always intimidating. Selena didn't laugh at her answers, didn't make her feel awkward, and showed no signs of condescension. That simple conversation gave Stevany a bit of courage.
After a while, she finally decided to bring up the topic she had been wanting to discuss.
“Selena, may I ask you something?”
“Sure. What would you like to ask?” Selena replied.
“I’m still struggling to understand Physics. If you don’t mind, could we study together?”
Selena smiled immediately.
“Of course. We can even invite other friends to study together.”
Stevany felt relieved upon hearing that answer. It turned out her request wasn't seen as a bother, the fears she had imagined never materialized.
After school, Stevany took a different approach. She invited a few friends to prepare for the Physics test. Although still nervous, she managed to speak up and explain what she wanted to do.
Before long, a group of students gathered to study. They opened their books, prepared their notes, and worked on practice problems together.
Selena helped explain the difficult material. She used simple examples to make the concepts easier for her friends to grasp. Whenever someone didn't understand, Selena didn't place blame; instead, she tried explaining it again in a different way. Stevany, too, began to feel brave enough to ask questions.
She no longer kept her confusion to herself. If there was a formula she didn't understand, she would ask about it and listen to the explanations from Selena and her friends.
The study atmosphere, initially serious, shifted to something more relaxed. They exchanged ideas, solved problems, and laughed whenever they spotted small calculation errors.
There, Stevany learned an important lesson: difficulties don't always have to be faced alone. Asking for help isn't a sign of incompetence, rather, the courage to admit you don't understand something can be the starting point of the learning process.
The next day, the Physics test began. Stevany still felt a bit of tension, but she was no longer overcome by panic. She read the questions carefully and tried to recall the discussions from their study session.
When she encountered a difficult question, she didn't give up immediately. She tried to understand the information provided and then worked through the problem using the knowledge she had gained.
A few days later, the teacher handed back the test results. Stevany was overjoyed when she saw her grade. It might not have been the highest score in the class, but it was enough to prove that her efforts had paid off.
Selena congratulated her. “Great job, Stevany. You really put in the effort.”
Those simple words brought a smile to Stevany’s face. She began to feel more accepted and no longer felt quite so awkward around her friends.
From that moment on, small changes began to appear. Stevany found the courage to initiate greetings, participate in discussions, and join in group activities. She remained a quiet person, but that trait no longer left her trapped in isolation.
Stevany’s story shows that major changes sometimes stem from very simple actions. A greeting, a single question, or the courage to ask for help can open up opportunities we never imagined possible.
In life, fear often makes us envision worst-case scenarios before we even try. We fear rejection, making mistakes, or being perceived as incapable. Yet, we will never know the outcome unless we dare to take that first step.
So, do not let fear stand in the way of your opportunities to learn and grow. You don’t have to become a confident person overnight, start slowly, with small actions you can take today.
Dare to say hello. Ask questions when you don’t understand something. Seek help when things feel overwhelming.
After all, you don’t have to face every problem alone. Sometimes, a single small step can lead to friendship, knowledge, and profound change in one’s life.
